Dot Day

Description: For Dot Day, we read the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. The story is about a young girl named Vashti who believes she can't draw. After art class, her teacher encourages her to "just make a more and see where it takes you". Vashti made a single dot on her paper and her teacher framed it and displayed it. This small act gives Vashti the confidence to try more. We then created our own dot using a coffee filter, markers, oil pastels, and watercolors.

Extension Activity: An extension activity that can be done with this art activity is literacy extension. For literacy, the class would re-read the book and discuss how Vashti didn't think she could draw yet. The students will then write "I can't ___ yet, but I will keep trying!" This activity encourages students to write a short paragraph or a story about something they have struggles with but kept practicing.
