Clay Making
Description: Students began by wedging the clay they were given kneading, slamming, and slapping it to remove air bubbles and prepare it for use. Once the clay was properly wedged, they rolled it out using pins and wooden guides to ensure an even thickness. As a class, we decided on a flower design. Each student rolled coils to form petal borders or cut out individual petals to shape and join together. After completing the flat flower designs on the table, students carefully lifted their creations and placed them into bowls to give the flowers a curved, three-dimensional form.
Extension Activity: Students will expand on their individual flower creations by designing and assembling a large, collaborative “clay garden” that incorporates varied textures, forms, and sculptural techniques.
